What is elderflower?

Elderflowers refer to the petite white flowers of the elder tree. These edible flowers have delicate floral notes and a slightly sweet flavor – ideal for making syrups, liqueurs, and cordials.

The elder tree is widespread across the United Kingdom. The popular St Germain elderflower liqueur is made from elderflowers harvested from the French Alps!

Ingredients for elderflower co*cktails

You only need eight ingredients to make this mouth-watering elderflower drink. Here’s everything you’ll need to get started:

Elderberry co*cktail

  • Peach slices – Sliced thinly and extra set aside for garnish. You can peel peaches and remove the skin if you prefer.
  • Blackberries – Reserve extra for garnish.
    • Substitution: Blueberries could be used.
  • Mint leaves – Fresh mint is crucial for these alcoholic peach drinks for the best flavor.
    • Substitution: Shake things up by using basil, lemon verbena, thyme, or rosemary.
  • Vodka – Plain vodka is commonly used for this peach alcoholic drink.
    • Substitution: If you have it, I strongly recommend using peach-flavored vodka – so good! However, you can also swap in your favorite brand of Gin for an elderflower gin co*cktail.
  • Elderflower liqueur
    • Substitution: Rose liqueur or orange blossom liqueur. Elderflower syrup or cordial are good non-alcoholic alternatives.
  • Lemon juice – Always use freshly squeezed lemon juice. While bottled lemon juice is convenient, it’s never quite as bright and flavorful as freshly squeezed lemon! Or, a blend of fresh lemon and lime juice is also an option.
    • Substitution: If you use bottled lemon juice, I strongly recommend Nellie’s Famous Key Lime Juice. This brand tastes super close to the real deal.
  • Agave nectar – To taste. This is optional for added sweetness.
  • Sprite– To taste. This is great for a bit of fizz!
    • Substitution: You can use sparkling mineral water, such as Topo Chico, club soda, or your favorite seltzer brand instead.

Variations of peach co*cktails

This elderflower liqueur drink is flexible, allowing simple ingredient swaps or add-ins. Here are some ideas to get those creative juices flowing:

  • Make a mocktail. Turn your boozy muddled peach co*cktail into alcohol-free drinks by leaving out the vodka and elderflower liqueur. And instead, adding elderflower syrup or cordial with additional Sprite.
  • Make a different floral mixed drink. If you don’t enjoy elderflower, consider making this drink with rose liqueur, lavender liqueur, or hibiscus liqueur.
  • Serving style. I’ve served these elderflower drinks in single glasses, but you could make a larger quantity and serve it in a pitcher for your guests to help themselves.
  • Alcohol level. For a stronger vodka and elderflower peachy co*cktail, increase the vodka and elderflower liqueur!
  • Different Spirits. Vodka isn’t your only choice! Tequila blanco, white rum, or botanical gin would also be lovely.

How to make co*cktails with elderflower

These peach elderflower co*cktails are a breeze to make. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Muddle: To a co*cktail shaker, add the peaches, berries, and mint leaves. Grab your muddler and muddle the ingredients until the fruit releases it’s juice.
  2. Add the good stuff: To the co*cktail shaker with the fruit, add in the vodka, elderberry liqueur, fresh lemon juice, and agave if using. Fill the shaker 3/4 of the way full with ice and then put the cap on the shaker. Using both hands to hold the shaker closed, shake vigorously until the co*cktail shaker is very cold to the touch, about 45 seconds.
  3. Pour peachy co*cktail: Fill two co*cktail glasses with ice and pour the elderflower peach co*cktail over ice. Top with sprite or club soda, if using, and garnish with fresh slices of peach and a few berries. Enjoy immediately.

Tips for making the best elderflower co*cktail

  • Double. Easily double or triple this recipe when serving a crowd. Heck, you could even multiply it by four!
  • Sweetness. If you enjoy sweeter co*cktails, a splash or two of agave nectar is perfect in this recipe! Always taste to test the level of sweetness!
  • Fizz. The Sprite is optional, but does add a lovely little fizz to this peach summer drink. However, make sure you only use it to top your drinks. And, don’t add it to the shaker!
  • Drink to taste. Always drink to taste when making fruity drinks with vodka. View this recipe as a mere template and increase or decrease the amount of vodka and liqueur as you desire.
  • Order is important. Add the elderberry vodka co*cktail ingredients first into the shaker, followed by the ice. This ensures better mixing.
  • Large ice. I prefer large ice when making co*cktails and smaller ice (crushed or chipped) will melt faster, diluting the co*cktail flavor.
  • Straining if you like. While not necessary, if you want to be fancy or ensure that nothing unwanted ends up in your assembled St Germain drink, strain the shaken mixture into the serving glasses.
  • Fresh ingredients. Always use the freshest fruit when making simple drinks like this elder drink recipe.

FAQs: co*cktail with elderflower

Is elderflower liqueur the same as St Germain?

St Germain is a popular brand of elderflower liqueur. The St Germain brand has a delicate and distinct flavor, made from elderflower blossoms that are picked in the French Alps.

What pairs well with elderflowers?

Citrus fruits, tart berries, stone fruits (such as peaches), fresh herbs (such as mint and basil), and vanilla all pair great with elderflower in terms of flavor.

And from an alcohol perspective, elderflower pairs well with champagne or sparkling wine, Prosecco or dry white wine, vodka, gin, or white rum.

Elderflower vs elderberry?

Elderflower and berries come from the elder tree, but refer to different parts of the tree.

Elderflowers are the flowers of the elder tree, which have a delicate and fragrant profile and a floral and sweet honey flavor – perfect for making syrups, liqueurs, and cordials.

Elderberries are the dark berries on the elder tree. They are tart in flavor and great for making jams, jellies, syrups, and wine!

Serving this peachy co*cktail

Garnish your elderflower co*cktails with thin slices of peach, fresh mint leaves, a spring of mint, fresh whole berries, and lemon wedges.

Top up each glass with a shot or two of Sprite just before serving for some fizz!

How to serve elderberry drinks?

Serving these elderflower beverages in single glasses is great when enjoying at home. However, if you are serving these at a party, you will want to consider increasing the amount of ingredients and serving this delicious boozy beverage in a large pitcher instead. Just don’t forget the fresh fruity garnish.

Adding a separate bowl of fresh garnish (peach slices and blackberries) is also a great idea and allows your guests to tailor their drinks.

For single serving glasses, consider garnishing with fresh mint and rimming your glasses with lemon wedges and sugar. But make sure you allow the rims time to dry before serving the co*cktails.

What to serve this elderberry alcoholic drink?

Enjoy your peach co*cktails with a variety of foods and treats! Here are my favorite dishes to inspire you!

  • Cheese and fruit platter or charcuterie board with brie, camembert, cheddar, and baked goat cheese dip. Surround the cheeses with your favorite crackers, fresh berries, and grapes.
  • Food on a stick is always a great complement to co*cktails: Shrimp skewers, mini Caprese skewers, chicken skewers, or fruit skewers.
  • Bruschetta – Traditional or bruschetta-inspired flatbread pizza!
  • Miniature desserts like these cake bites, mini apple pie bites, blood orange bars, or confetti cookies.
  • Make it a peach party and celebrate fresh stone fruit by pairing your peachy drink with peach and burrata salad, grilled chicken with peach bbq sauce, and peach pudding with chia seeds for dessert.

Storing alcoholic peach drinks

How to store and how long does it keep?

  • Make these peach co*cktails with elderflower ahead of time by mixing all ingredients, except the Sprite and fresh garnish, and storing the mixture in an airtight container or jar in the fridge for 3-4 days. However, make sure you wait to add the Sprite and fresh garnishes to the glasses until just before serving.
  • Leftover elderflower drink mixture can be frozen in popsicle molds or ice cube trays for future adult treats!

Can you freeze it?

Yes! I recommend storing any leftover elderberry co*cktail in ice pop molds or ice cube trays. This way, you can enjoy the drink later as a boozy cold treat for summer.

Notes

  • While the recipe is written for 2 co*cktails, it is very easy to double, triple, or even quadruple the recipe. Simply hover your mouse over the servings to adjust the recipe.
  • Vodka: The recipe indicates plain vodka, but if you have access to peach flavored vodka, I urge you to use that instead!
  • The agave nectar in the recipe is optional. However, if you like your co*cktail on the sweet side you might want to add a splash or two of agave to the co*cktail. I added 1 teaspoons of agave to the co*cktail shaker when making mine, but you should always make co*cktails to YOUR taste!
  • Topping the co*cktail off with sprite is optional as well. If you like a stiff drink, I would nix the sprite. However if you are looking for more of a spritzer style drink, try adding a splash or two of sprite or club soda to the co*cktail. Just make sure you are adding the soda to the co*cktail and NOT to the shaker. Do NOT try to shake the soda!! It will end up fizzing and exploding, which is never good.
  • Please remember you should always make your co*cktails to taste!! The measurements in the recipe are mere suggestions; you should use the recipe as a guide and not a rule book. If you like a stiffer drink, add more vodka. If you really love fresh fruit, add more blackberries and peaches. Just do you!
