Palmer studied in Paris until 1876. It was during his time in Paris that Palmer’s work became influenced by Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran. He also became acquainted with Carolus-Duran's student John Singer Sargent.Palmer is particularly known for his winter landscapes with their emphasis on light and ambiance. For those he became known as the "painter of the American winter." Joan Miro (Spanish (Catalan), 1893-1983). Aquatint and etching on Guarro paper depicting an abstract composition in bright colors, plate 5 from the "Espriu" Suite, 1974. Pencil signed along the lower right; numbered 20/50 along the lower left.Provenance: Private Connecticut Collection, 1991; Private Minnesota Collection.Lot Essay:Joan Miro's early works were influenced by Catalan folk art and Fauvism, but it was his encounter with Surrealism in Paris during the 1920s that profoundly shaped his artistic vision. Embracing the Surrealist ethos of unlocking the subconscious mind, Miro developed a unique visual language characterized by biomorphic forms, dreamlike symbols, and vibrant colors. His paintings, such as "The Farm" (1921-1922) and "The Tilled Field" (1923-1924), evoke a sense of poetic spontaneity and primal energy.Throughout his career, Miro continued to innovate, exploring various mediums including painting, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking. His experimentation with automatic drawing and spontaneous mark-making liberated his artistic process, allowing for a fluid and intuitive approach to creation. Miro's iconic works, such as "The Harlequin's Carnival" (1924-1925) and "The Birth of the World" (1925), exemplify his playful yet profound exploration of form and color. In addition to his artistic achievements, Miro was a committed advocate for social and political causes, particularly during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War and World War II. His art often served as a vehicle for political commentary, expressing solidarity with the oppressed and advocating for peace and freedom. Miro's enduring legacy as a pioneer of Surrealism and a champion of artistic experimentation continues to inspire generations of artists, as his boundless imagination and creative spirit remain as relevant today as ever before. Through his daring exploration of the subconscious and his fearless embrace of spontaneity, Miro transcended artistic conventions, leaving an indelible mark on the trajectory of modern art.Sight; height: 33 3/4 in x width: 27 1/2 in. Framed; height: 45 1/2 in x width: 39 in x depth: 1 in.Condition: The print is in good condition with bold and bright colors. The print is hinged along the top edge of the verso. Richard MacDonald (American, b. 1946). Large bronze sculpture titled "Red Dress, Half Life," from the "Joie de Vivre" series depicting a half life-size ballerina perched delicately on the tip of her toes. A radiant smile lights up her face and she seems to spin gracefully as the fabric of her dress swishes around her. Signed and dated 2001 along the base. From an edition of 90. With a wooden plinth.Provenance: The collection of Clint & Mary Ann Jurgens, Minnesota.Walt and Vi Jurgens, Clint’s parents, began supporting Sullivan Hills, a Lutheran summer camp near their farm in Gurley, Nebraska, 50 years ago. The camp generously welcomes all children of the area with financial help and love. We are directing the proceeds of this sale to the administrators of the camp, Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries. Find out more at www.nlom.org.Lot Essay:Richard MacDonald's sculptures celebrate the beauty and physicality of the human form. He was classically trained at Art Center College in Pasanda, California. Following the great sculptural masters such as Auguste Rodin and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, he adds a contemporary element to his figural creations. His ability to focus on how the body can be manipulated has led to his work with Cirque du Soleil, MGM, and the Olympic Games. His process involves making a clay "sketch" or maquette of his work. These quarter-size models are the basis for his half life to life-size works. He then utilizes the famously painstaking Lost Wax method in which his work will become first a wax model and then a bronze sculpture.(Including base) Height: 60 in x width: 30 in x depth: 22 1/2 in. Weight (without wooden base): 198 lbs 6 oz.Condition: There are no bends, breaks, losses, or restorations. Light dust/debris gathered in the recessed areas of the work. Light wear to the wooden base.

Lot 416
Charles I penny love token. 1625-1649 AD. Silver, 0.54g. 11.5mm. In Britain, the practice of giving ‘love tokens’ has been around from at least Roman times. The breaking of gold and coins were often included as part of the marriage ceremonial contract, as noted by Loreen Giese inÂCourtships, Marriage Customs, and Shakespeare’s ComediesÂ(2006). Ardent suitors would often bend the coins and present them to the lady they wished to court as a symbol of the strength of their love, affection and intent. If the love token was accepted, that meant the suitor was successful; if they were discarded, it was a rejection.
