Hendrik Prins, Amsterdam, an early 18th century walnut stick barometer, the moulded cornice above a pair of shaped brass plates engraved with scales marked 'Engelsc' and 'Rhynl. Duymen' to top, the right plate with vernier, and 'Hk. Prins fecit Amsteliam' below, the replaced visible tube flanked by trailing marquetry flowers, with bowfront cistern cover below, 97cm. Hk is most likely to be Hendrik. The Engelsche and Rynl. Daymen/Duymen refers to the measurement which is registered in English as well as Rhineland standards, and is the old spelling of Duimen which is Thumbs (as in measuring in Hands, Feet and Thumbs).
